Joel Confino, M.D., a NJ eye doctor at The Eye Care & Surgery Center provided information about eyelid inflammation, infection and blepharitis. “Eyelid inflammation, called blepharitis is a common and ongoing condition where the eyelids become inflamed and swollen-often with oily particles and bacteria coating the eyelid margin near the base of the eyelashes. This is an annoying condition that causes irritation, itchiness, redness and even stinging or burning of the eyes,” commented Dr. Confino.” While the underlying causes of blepharitis aren't completely understood, it can be associated with a bacterial eye infection, symptoms of dry eyes or certain types of skin conditions such as acne rosacea,” he further explained. Blepharitis is often a chronic, or ongoing, condition, but it can be controlled with one of more types of treatment that may include warm compresses, eyelid scrubs, antibiotic ointment, nutritional therapy and good overall eyebrow, scalp and hair hygiene.

NJ Corneal Specialist on UV Eye Protection
“As a corneal specialist I constantly remind patients that protecting their eyes from UV should be an important part of their daily routine in order to maintain the best eye health and vision,” commented Joel Confino, M.D. of The Eye Care & Surgery Center with offices in Westfield, Warren and Iselin New Jersey. “The scientific literature is quite clear that spending long hours in the sun without eye protection can damage your eyes by contributing to cataracts and growths on the eye, including certain types of cancers that affect the delicate skin around the eyes,” Dr. Confino further explained. Based on these studies, The Eye Care & Surgery Center recommends that you wear 99 percent and higher UV (ultraviolet radiation)-absorbent sunglasses and a brimmed hat whenever you're in the sun for long periods of time.
Proper sunglasses are critical to protecting your eyes from sun-related damage, and they should be worn anytime you are outdoors, particularly during the summer when the level of ultraviolet radiation (UVA and UVB) is at least three time higher than during the winter, when you are at the beach or in the water, when you are participating in winter sports, especially at high altitudes where the UV is particularly strong and if you use medications that can cause sensitivity to light.
The best sunglasses offer 100 percent UV absorption, are of the best optical quality and are impact resistant. If you wear contact lenses, they may not protect your eyes from UV light. There are contact lenses available with UV protection. If you do not have contact lenses that absorb UV light, you need to protect your eyes with sunglasses.
But keep in mind that sunglasses cannot protect your eyes from certain intense light sources such as arc welding, tanning beds/lights, snowfields or gazing directly at the sun, especially during a solar eclipse. These intense lights can severely damage your eyes. “Looking at any of these light sources without adequate protection can cause a painful corneal condition called photokeratitis or even damage to the retina, causing a permanent loss of central vision,” stressed Dr. Confino. The Eye Care & Surgery Center is happy to recommend the appropriate measures to take to protect your eyes in special situations.
If you have questions or need an appointment to learn more about protecting your eyes from UV please call The Eye Care & Surgery Center at 908-789-8999, visit The Eye Care & Surgery Center or facebook.com/eyecareandsurgerycenter.

NJ Cataract Surgery & Lens Implant Cost
NJ Cataract Surgeon Joel Confino, M.D. shared some thoughts
about the cost of Cataract Surgery and Lens Implants. “The entire area of
information regarding the cost of Cataract Surgery and Lens implants can get a
little confusing for any patients,” commented Dr. Confino. “Fortunately at The
Eye Care & Surgery Center our staff is dedicated to helping patients better
understand what is applicable to their particular situation. It gets a bit
confusing because although almost all insurances and Medicare cover the bulk of
the cost of Cataract Surgery and basic Lens Implants, deductibles, co-pays and the extent to which
certain services are or are not covered can affect the actual amount you might
need to pay out of pocket, “ he further explained.
Lens Implant Fee
It is helpful for patients who
have cataracts and who might be considering cataract surgery and lens implants to review some of the following information:
Preoperative Testing and
Consultation
With the exception of co-pays
and deductibles specific to your insurance plan the eye examination,
consultation and measurements necessary for Cataract Surgery and basic
Intraocular Lens (IOL) implantation are covered services. If there are
specialized tests that might be required such as more precise types of testing
for multifocal lens implants or toric lens implants, you may need to pay for
these tests out of pocket as your insurance and Medicare may only cover the
basic testing. If this is the case these extra tests may range in cost up to a
few or several hundred dollars depending on the scope of the necessary testing.
Surgery Center Facility Fee
The surgery center facility fee
is generally covered by insurances and Medicare although there may be a small
co-pay or deductible with certain plans. This fee will cover the use of the
facility including the operating room, the nursing staff, the instrumentation
and equipment and all related operating room supplies. Depending on the types
of anesthesia used it is possible that there will be an additional fee-mostly
covered by your insurance or Medicare-for the administration of anesthesia and
the staff.
Cataract Surgeon’s Fee
The Cataract Surgeon’s fee is
generally covered by insurances and Medicare although there may be a small
co-pay or deductible with certain plans.
The cost of a basic Monofocal
lens implant is generally covered by insurances and Medicare within the
facility fee. However, should you and your Cataract Surgeon elect to use an
astigmatism correcting toric lens implant or multifocal lens implant there will
be an out of pocket fee as most insurances and Medicare do not cover these more
advanced types of Lens Implants.

Can I Afford the Cost of LASIK in NJ
A lot of our patients from all over NJ really want to have LASIK at The Eye Care & Surgery Center but get stuck when they ask themselves, “Can I afford the cost of LASIK?” With the economy being tough it can be unnerving to think about spending money on anything-no less something that seems a bit frivolous. For folks who consider their eyes and vision correction frivolous-LASIK is not for them. For people who can imagine doing the kinds of things they do each day-or would like to do each day-without the hassle of having to wear glasses or contacts-LASIK can be something to be had at any cost.
Many people who decide to have LASIK think they should shop for the best price. We’re not sure what would possess folks to think about price shopping for surgery. Oh, maybe because they forgot that LASIK is surgery? Maybe it’s because they see a bunch of deceptive advertisements and hype. It’s tough to believe that folks would shop around for LASIK like they shop for a brake job for their car-but it happens every single day. It’s also tough to believe that folks would shop price for LASIK RATHER than shop for the best LASIK Surgeons to whom they are entrusting their eye health and vision.
LASIK is about three things…..First: LASIK is about safety and results. Second: LASIK is about safety and results. Third: LASIK is about safety and results. Safety and results depend on the skill, experience and judgment of LASIK surgeon and the staff.
Almost ALL practices today have ways of making LASIK affordable. This can be through the use of monthly payment plans, the use of employer Flex Plans and special offers that can help you use your tax refund or bonus. Shop surgeon quality-NOT price……find the best LASIK surgeon with whom you can develop TRUST. One who gets to know you. One who you can get to know. You may already know them based on their reputation in the community or by the fact that they have taken care of a family member, co-worker or friend. There is no way of setting a best price on empathy, trust, comfort, safety and results.

NJ Eye Specialist on Eye Watering
NJ Eye Specialist Joel Confino, M.D. of The Eye Care & Surgery Center commented on eye watering and watery eyes. “Watery eyes are the common description for the eye condition called Epiphora,” commented Dr. Confino a New Jersey Corneal Specialist. “Watery eyes or excessive watering of the eyes can even result in tears running over your eyelids and down your cheeks. While having enough tears is important for your eye health and vision, too many tears can be annoying and troubling,” he further noted. Watery eyes or Epiphora can be caused by either or both of two main eye problems. First, watery eyes can occur because you simply produce too many tears. Second, eye watering can occur because the tears you do produce just don’t drain properly. As odd as it may seem, one of the most common causes of producing too many tears is dry eyes. When you have a dry eye your eye can “overreact” and produce too much tear fluid due to the irritation. Then, normally when we blink the eyelids push the tears across the eye’s surface, causing them to collect in the lower inner corner of the eye and draining through a tiny opening called a “puncta” into the nasolacrimal canal and out through your nose. If the puncta are closed or the canal is blocked the tears will simply stay stagnant in the inner corners of your eyes making them seem very watery.
So why do we develop tear drainage problems or excessive tear production problems? There are many causes of watery eye and watering eyes are pretty common in people who have dry eye syndrome, clogged tear ducts from infection of inflammation, conjunctivitis or “pink eye”, exposure to irritation from smog, smoke, excessive dust and chemical vapors as well as foreign bodies, eyelid problems turning in or out and corneal abrasions.
If you or someone you know suffers from watery eyes or is bothered by watering eyes please call The Eye Care & Surgery Center at 908-789-8999, visit www.newjerseyvision.com or www.facebook.com/eyecareandsurgerycenter to schedule an appointment for an examination.

NJ Corneal Specialist on Herpes Eye Infections
New Jersey Corneal Specialist Joel Confino, M.D. comments on Herpes Simplex eye infections. “When I discuss Herpes Simplex eye infections with patients they are taken by surprise when they learn that ocular Herpes affects many more people each year than one might think,” noted Dr. Confino of The Eye Care & Surgery Center with offices in Westfield, Iselin & Warren NJ. “Ocular Herpes or Herpes of the eye is caused by the Herpes Simplex virus and is the most common causes of corneal blindness in the United States today. Up to 50% of people who have a single Herpes Simplex eye infection will experience a flare up or recurrence and sometimes this can lead to damage and scarring of the cornea which requires a corneal transplant”.
Ocular Herpes may start as a painful sore on the eyelid or surface of the eye. If left untreated, it may multiply and begin to destroy epithelial cells and progress deeper into the cornea. If the Ocular Herpes penetrates the deeper layers of the cornea and causes a stromal keratitis it may cause corneal scarring-so prompt diagnosis and treatment of Ocular Herpes is important.
It is estimated that 400,000 people in the United States have had some type of Ocular Herpes, with more than 50,000 initial and recurring cases being diagnosed each year. Of these, it is believed that 25% are the more severe form of Herpes Stromal Keratitis. The recurrence of Herpes Simplex eye infections is significant in that it appears to recur in about 10% of patients with one year, 23% of patients within two years and 63% of patients within 20 years of their initial infection. Sometimes a recurrence can be prompted by sunlight, stress, fevers or an unrelated eye injury. Quick diagnosis and treatment is the key to avoiding corneal scarring, vision loss and the possible need for a corneal transplant.
If you or someone you know is experiencing any signs or symptoms of Corneal infection-especially if they have had any trauma to their eyes-please call The Eye Care & Surgery Center at 908-789-8999 and request an immediate appointment.
